Baja Country Club

Baja Country Club is a course in Mexico that has been going for 15 years. In it's 15 years, it has had many owners and many up times and down times. At this point, the owner are from Rosarito Beach and want to really change the way it's run. The course manager hired, Antonio Candela, has been making huge improvements to it. They definitely want people to come but the traffic isn't what they'd like, yet.

It's a perfect setting. It's in a valley with canyon walls surrounding it, it is just moments from the ocean, and it's easy walking from one hole to another. There isn't a home on the course but that will soon be changed with the big plans that Jose Luis Vasquez, Baja Country Club marketing manager, has for the place.

The goal of Baja Country Club is to build hundreds of houses to sell. The homes start at $150,000 dollars and $180,000 dollars to be next to the fairway. Why such a good deal? Well, the club wants to pull in a market of homeowners looking for a second place to buy but just can't cope with a million-dollar condo in Orange County or San Diego.

The clubhouse is being expanded tremendously with an added swimming pool to it. A huge locker room is built, along with new marble flooring, hot tub, and a sauna. All this, with the 3 model homes, should be bringing in more people soon.

It is taking a major undergoing here and there are more people working on course than you'll find golfers. As you are going down the fairway, you'll notice what looks like a bunch of golf balls that have been left sitting there. As you get closer though, you'll see that they're clusters of mushrooms growing on the front nine. The greens are pretty rough and slow, and the fairways are hard to tell if they are rough or smooth. All these imperfections don't make the play at Baja Country Club any less fun. Although it is a rough course you can definitely have a good time.

With the few people that come in, there are many times that you can play quite a few holes a second time. You can have fun with many holes that are offered. For instance, the sixth hole is a very short hole that's an island green. The 7th is a par-4 that is a bit longer and is an island green. The 8th is a par-3 that is a fun one and has a water carry the whole way.

Playing the back nine is a bit tougher. The 13th hole is a long par-5 that lands right into a fairway that has palm trees surrounding it on all sides. The 15th is a par-3 that may have your ball landing in the water to the right of it. The final hole is only a 300 yarder but make a 90-degree turn. Luckily, Candela is going to make a change by reversing the nines to give golfers a good par-5 finish hole right by the clubhouse.

It wouldn't be fair to judge Baja Country Club because it is only in the makings of becoming tons better than it is. If you're one who wants a course with immaculate conditions, well, just give Baja Country Club some time to improve and you'll have one. It is truly a work in progress.
